Qs for Stevie.

Today my guest in the Comfy Chair is my friend Stevie Carroll, author of ‘The Monitors’, in Noble Romance’s Echoes of Possibilities, which was longlisted by the Tiptree Awards in 2010. She has also written short stories that appeared in British Flash and Tea and Crumpet, anthologies published by the UK Meet organisation. Her first solo collection of short stories, A Series of Ordinary Adventures, is published by Candlemark and Gleam in May.

Hi Stevie, thanks for joining me today.

Six Sentence Sunday

Time for another Six Sentence Sunday offering.
The rules are simple – sign up on the website then on the following Sunday post six sentences, no more no less because it will be checked, to your blog. Plenty of other people do it too so you can read theirs and they can read yours.
Today we’re back with Cynfal and his ‘sheep’.
Cynon hailed them with a cheery grin. “I said I’d find you something to ride,” he said as soon as Cynfal was close enough to hear. “I’m assured it’s a horse but you might have to dig down through the winter coat to find it.”
Cynfal accepted the halter rope and tried not to smile as the little white beast nuzzled his fingers. “If I ride with my knees drawn up …?”
“Or crosslegged?” Aeddan suggested.

Yes, it’s that time of week again, folkies! Six Sunday is an opportunity to try bitesized samples of work in a dozen different genres. Just click on the links to see the authors offerings. If you like the idea a new sign up post will be put up about Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Unpublished authors are welcome to register as well

Set in Scotland and Northumbria in the late 7th century AD, A Fierce Reaping tells the story of some of the men who took part in an ill-fated attempt to drive the invading Saxons back. Cynfal, down on his luck and with nothing to lose, joins Troop Three of the cavalry, aka the Misbegotten, made up from volunteers the other commanders don’t want. Cynfal knows that they will get all the dirtiest jobs but in the meantime he is pleased to catch up with old friends and see to the education of the promising youngsters:

“New girls – where?” Pup demanded.
The guard shrugged. “I dunno – it’s just what I heard.”
“And what do you think you’re going to do with girls, Pup?” Cynfal asked as they hurried on up the track.
Pup flushed, the pink showing clearly even through the wispy whiskers he was cultivating. “I’m not sure,” he admitted with a sheepish grin, “but I’d dearly love the chance to find out.”

More Guests

And a new format. I’ve been thinking of something to call my guest posts and I think I have struck on just the thing. From now on the brave people who volunteer to contribute articles about their interests or answers to question will be placed in The Comfy Chair. Nobody expects an inquisition but you may as well have somewhere nice to sit while you endure it. 🙂

In my Comfy Chair this week will be:

Tristram La Roche, author of On My Knees, Fixed, Lorenzo the Magnificent and The Hun and The General.

Kay Berrisford, author of Bound for the Forest, whose second novel, Bound to the Beast, is out TODAY!

Next week there will be more of them, brave souls.

Excuse me while I go and plump up the cushions!

Six Sentence Sunday

Six Sentence Sunday – I’ve borrowed their nice graphic but I wish they had a nice manly one of a big hairy bloke with a sword or something.

6 sentences from WIP, A Fierce Reaping, set in Scotland and Northumbria in the late 7th century AD. Accepted into Troop Three, aka The Misbegotten, or Cynon’s Hounds, Cynfal is beginning to gather the equipment he needs.

“So it’s three years since we last got drunk together,” Aeddan said, finally. “Damn me, it feels like longer. Ah, there’s Cynon, and it looks like he might have found you something to ride.”
“I’d be happier if it had been a pony.” Cynfal scowled.  “What is that – a big sheep?”

Grinning like a monkey because I have finished “On A Lee Shore”!  And about bloody time too! It was my 2010 Nanowrimo and I did 60K in the time, no problem, but lost all my impetus afterwards. Now it can sit for a bit while I do something else to clear my palate before I do the second draft. 🙂

And the meme:

I’ve been tagged for the Lucky Seven by Julia Kavan!

Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript
Go to line 7
Post on your blog the next 7 lines, or sentences, as they are – no cheating
Tag 7 other authors to do the same

Last time I did it there was a paragraphs option but I have been good and conformed.

However I’m not going to tag other people to do it. I don’t think I know 7 authors who haven’t already been tagged. 🙂 If you fancy having a go please let me know. I’d love to read your Sevens.

This snippet is from “Eleventh Hour” – a story about the Special Intelligence Service set in 1928.

Word count

As of this morning I have cracked the 100 thousand word mark on my novel “On A Lee Shore”. this is good because the end is nigh but bad because I’ve written two chapter that are pretty much continuous action and now have to find a way of ending the damned story in a way that isn’t a damp little fizzle after lots of KABOOMs.

So there’s still a cause for concern and still a lot of work to be done [after the 1st draft is complete the story can marinate for a while before I’ll go at it with the pruning shears] but I can’t help looking at that word count and feeling just a bit pleased.

Weird things brains.  I’ve been complaining today that because I’m busy doing something else my characters have decided that now is the time to perk up and start performing. By the time I get home from the day job they will have shut up again, bless ’em.

But then I picked up a pen and wrote 400 words in my lunchtime so I’m wondering if it’s the physical process of typing that my mind is objecting to. Either way 400 words between answering phone calls is a respectable number, even if they are no earthly use to me because i was on a sugar rush – mmmm Mars Bar – and let my sense of humour run away with me.

I can draw too. I think it’s definitely typing that’s the problem.
