Blurb(s):

It’s up to Calder to show his Christmas-hating merman what the season is really about.

Calder lives a quiet life in his cabin on the edge of the bay. He has his best friend Erik and for now, that’s enough. Then his life takes an unexpected turn when an event causes him to come face-to-face with a real merman.
Tamesis knows that soon the waters will freeze over, which means that dreaded time of the year is coming—Christmas. As a merman he is not affected by the change in water temperature, but when it freezes over he can no longer spend his days watching the man on the shore. That all changes when Calder falls into Tamesis’s world.
The more the two get to know each other, the more they start to care, but will they be brave enough to admit their feelings? Or will Tamesis end up with an even bigger reason to hate Christmas?

Excerpt:

The man ducked his head in what Calder guessed was embarrassment. “Forgive me, my name is Tamesis.”
“Nice to meet you, Tamesis, my name is Calder.” Calder would have held out his hand, but he didn’t want to move from his cocoon.
“Yes, I know,” Tamesis said as he smiled at him.
Calder frowned. “How do you know my name?”
Calder watched, fascinated as Tamesis blushed. Between the blush and Tamesis’s green hair, it reminded Calder of Christmas.
I need to figure out a way to get home.
“Uh, well you see, I’ve been watching you,” Tamesis admitted.
Calder raised an eyebrow at that. “Because that doesn’t sound creepy at all.”
“It doesn’t?” Tamesis looked relieved.
Okay…Looks like he doesn’t understand sarcasm.
“I’m sorry, it sounds very creepy actually. I was being sarcastic when I said it didn’t.”
“Oh.”
Calder watched as Tamesis seemed to slump down in his position, all while still lying on his side next to Calder. A feeling of sadness flooded him and Calder realised that it was like all of the other times he’s felt emotions flood him when he’d looked out over Hudson Bay. Giving into his instincts, he snuggled a little closer to Tamesis, who tightened his arms around Calder. In that moment Calder realised that not only was Tamesis holding him, but they were both naked.
“Um, Tam? Why are we naked?” he asked, then looked up into Tamesis’s eyes.
“You were cold, I had to save you. The clothes would have hindered that,” Tamesis replied, but he looked confused for some reason.
“I see, and how did you save me? How were you able to survive without needing to be saved yourself?” Calder asked curiously. His curiosity grew when he saw Tamesis gulp and seem to gather his courage.
“The cold does not affect me—”
“Why not?” Calder interrupted.
“Because.” Tamesis paused and looked into Calder’s eyes, almost as if he was searching for something. He must have found it because he continued, and what he said shocked Calder right to his core.
“I’m a merman.”

A King Undone
by Cooper Davis

Noble Pleasures, Book 1

Sometimes you have to risk everything, to follow your heart…

In a world where gentlemen openly court and marry fellow noblemen, the threat of scandal still lurks behind every velvet drape for kings and princes. Such has been the fate for King Arend Tollemach, forced to sacrifice his heart on the altar of regal duty.

Now that his wife is dead and his royal obligations are at an end, he’s ready to take an unthinkable risk. King Arend seeks a concubine from Temple Sapphor, a secretive, gated world where he will finally shed his virginity—as least as it pertains to making love to a man.

Julian never thought he’d spend ten years on the temple shelf, passed over again and again. Just when he despairs of ever finding placement in a nobleman’s bed, Arend walks into the temple. A lonely eyed, beautiful king who could easily steal his heart.

Arend discovers he has no problem opening his bed to the exquisite concubine. The problem lies in finding the key to his long-shuttered heart.

Warning: Contains a beautiful, virgin king desperate to bed another man, a concubine who fantasizes about being claimed and revered by a strong monarch, and a sea of scandal set against a sensual, palatial backdrop.

AUTHOR BIO –

Cooper Davis first discovered the allure of m/m storytelling when she watched My Beautiful Launderette with a college roommate. Later, her passion for stories about men falling in love and finding their HEA together was stoked by online slash fiction. After years as an avid fan of m/m and slash, Cooper finally decided to try her hand at penning her own stories about same-gender romance and love.

A voracious reader across all subgenres of m/m fiction, Cooper is particularly fond of courtships set against the breathless backdrop of scandal and intrigue found in period drawing rooms. She is thrilled that her first historically themed m/m romance series debuts this December with A KING UNDONE (Samhain).

Breeches, Cravats, and Greatcoats

First of all, I want to thank Elin for having me on her blog. It’s so great to be here! I want to talk to you all about the sexy attire that the men wore during the Regency period that I used in my book Groom Of Convenience book one of The Scandalous Whispers of the Remmington Realm from Dreamspinner Press.

When I first started to do the research for GoC, I had to first distinguish between a few things. I essentially had four different genders:

Male Men
Male Women
Female Men
Female Women

So I had to figure out the differences in attire when it came to what they would all wear. Would the Male Women all be walking around in dresses? Would the female men be walking around in breeches, waistcoats and greatcoats?

How the hell would that work?

Well I realized that it was all a matter of gender versus sexuality.

“Sex refers to a person’s biological status and is typically categorized as male, female, or intersex (i.e., atypical combinations of features that usually distinguish male from female). There are a number of indicators of biological sex, including sex chromosomes, gonads, internal reproductive organs, and external genitalia.

Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex. Behavior that is compatible with cultural expectations is referred to as gender-normative; behaviors that are viewed as incompatible with these expectations constitute gender non-conformity.
Gender identity refers to “one’s sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender” (American Psychological Association, 2006). When one’s gender identity and biological sex are not congruent, the individual may identify as transsexual or as another transgender category (cf. Gainor, 2000).

Gender expression refers to the “…way in which a person acts to communicate gender within a given culture; for example, in terms of clothing, communication patterns and interests. A person’s gender expression may or may not be consistent with socially prescribed gender roles, and may or may not reflect his or her gender identity” (American Psychological Association, 2008, p. 28).”

So using this definition from the American Psychological Association I used it to determine how each individual character would dress, act, and be referred to. So some male women would dress in the male attire, and be called by their male titles, and some would dress in the female dress and be referred to by their female titles.

Confused yet? LOL.

But the really fun part came in with dressing each character.

Heathcliff is a very masculine, alpha, male man.

He struts around Angland wearing a cravat, button down dress shirt, waistcoat, tight breeches or trousers, a pair of Hessian boots, carrying a cane in honor of his friend Orley Garrick who has to use one, wearing a greatcoat when the weather calls for it. His black hair is always pulled back in a queue at the nape of his neck, even though it puts the scar on his face in broad display and scares the delicate ladies, but Heathcliff Eddington, III, the Duke of Pompinshire, cares not one whit for the delicate constitution of these simpering misses, he wants a lady made of tougher stock than that.

There were skirted coats or waistcoats with tails on them as we know them. They had high collars. Breeches and trousers were also worn by gentlemen, pantaloons were usually worn by dandies to show off their… wares.
“Shirts and drawers were considered “undergarments” and the drawers were cut like breeches and made of linen or cotton. They fasten with a combination of drawstrings and buttons. Shirts were linen or cotton and blousy, with buttons at the neck and wrists. The collars are high and worn turned up to cover the neck, and often the jaw-line as well.

Coats were single or double-breasted, although double-breasted coats predominate by about four or five to one. They descend in front only to the natural waistline (i.e., about to the navel). They are uniformly cut so that the tails descend directly from the back panels; that is, there is no waist seam at the back, unlike modern tailcoats. Collars and lapels can be of moderate width or very wide. Especially early in the Regency, they are often arranged to stand up around the face and neck, but tend to lie flatter as time goes on. Sleeves are long, and the cuffs cover the base of the hand nearly as far as the thumb-joint. Earlier coats have scooped waistlines, in which the tails curve downward from a horizontal or slightly curved front edge.
Waistcoats are sleeveless but have collars and, usually, lapels. Early-Regency examples are likely to have standing collars, but later the collars are turned down. The body descends just below the natural waist, so that it projects an inch or two below the front of the coat; and, like the coat, it has a straight waistline (unlike the points on most modern vests). It should cover the waistband of the trousers or breeches. There may be lacing or an attached belt at the center back to ensure a close fit. Waistcoats may be single or double-breasted; the numbers of each style seem to be about equal. Any combination of single or double-breasted coat and waistcoat may be worn. Since double-breasted coats greatly outnumber single-breasted ones, the combination of either a single-breasted or double-breasted waistcoat with a double-breasted coat is most common, but both single and double-breasted waistcoats can also be worn with single-breasted coats. Earlier waistcoats are often striped, vertically or horizontally, or patterned, but grow plainer with time. Fabrics can be silks, wools, or linens. The buttons can match the fabric, particularly if it is fancy, or be of smooth metal.

Breeches are prescribed for evening wear. They are close-fitting, with much less fullness in the seat than earlier eighteenth-century examples (although, especially early, the crotch can be just as tight), and with higher waistlines, which should come to the natural waist or just above it. The waistband and top of the fall should be hidden by the waistcoat. The back of the waistband may have laces for a precise fit. The legs descend to just below the knees and are buttoned. There may be supplemental ribbon ties or straps with knee-buckles. The front is closed with a flap called a fall, rather than a fly as in modern trousers, which is not fashionable at this time. Falls are commonly narrow (as opposed to the broad-fall fronts of the late eighteenth century), with the fall covering about half the breeches’ front width. The fall may be set quite high, so that only the bottom corners of the opening appear below the waistcoat. Falls get narrower over time. Trousers initially resemble breeches, being tight through the thighs and knees, and continuing into close-fitting lower legs, almost as if the idea were to make breeches with attached stockings. Stirrup-straps are common on narrow trousers meant to be worn inside boots. Later in the Regency, trousers get wider, and can be quite full by the end of the period. Trousers worn with shoes commonly fall only to the ankles, rather than resting on the shoe-tops as modern examples do. Cuffs are not worn.

The cravat, a long strip of white linen, frequently starched, is the almost universal neckwear for Regency gentlemen. It is wound around the neck over the shirt collar (which should project above it) and tied in front. The cravat typically covers the entire neck up to the jaw-line. Beau Brummel is supposed to have ruined, on average, more than half a dozen neck-cloths a day before managing to arrange one to his satisfaction, but he was a famously fastidious dresser.”

The above is some of the research that I used from the website The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers while writing Groom Of Convenience along with a number of different sites. I think the pictures that I’ve sent will also give you a great sense of what the men looked like. While Lucien dressed just like Heathcliff much of the time, the only time he didn’t was when they got married and tradition dictated he wear a gown and what a gown it was, he was gorgeous and completely took Heathcliff’s breath away, though Heath couldn’t wait to take to rip it off of Lucien’s body as soon as they were alone, for more than one reason.
What did it look like?

Well, I guess you’ll just have to buy Groom Of Convenience to find out.

Thanks for having me, Elin! It was great to be here.

In an alternate universe, in the country of Angland, 1814, the gentry live lives of culture and class. It is a time of courtships, marriages of convenience, and titles, where scandal can ruin an entire family. Gender lines are blurred, and making a good match is of utmost importance. Children are born to men and women, which has led to the acceptance of same-sex marriages.

Lady Lucien Timothy Hawthorne is shocked and angry when he is betrothed against his will to Lord Heathcliff Eddington, III, the Duke of Pompinshire. While drowning his frustration at a popular gentleman’s club, he meets “Robert,” a gorgeous older man whom he sleeps with as “Timmy,” regardless of the potential damage to his reputation.

After their liaison, Lucien corresponds with Robert via letters left at Remmington, and they decide to elope. Before they can get away, Lucien meets his betrothed, Heathcliff, who he is surprised to discover is also his beloved, Robert. Both men desire a marriage of the heart, but they find out that sometimes a marriage of convenience can turn into love under the right circumstances. But Lucien has a secret, and Tlondon isn’t as safe as they once thought.

Excerpt:

Lucien inhaled deeply and then began to softly sing “Ae Fond Kiss,” a popular Tscottish ballad written twenty years prior, sliding his eyelids closed, afraid of any negative reaction from his betrothed. His mother used to sing it to him every night before leaving for a ball or party she was obligated to attend. Rosemary would sing the song and then kiss the top of his head. Annabelle would be waiting at the door, and when Rosemary finished, thinking that Lucien was asleep, she would meet Annabelle at the door, and the two of them would share a sweet kiss and then leave. Lucien loved those late-night lullabies by his mother, cherished them, and when he went to bed, even at his advanced age, he would sing the song to himself until he would fall asleep.
Finishing the last note of the song, Lucien opened his eyes and looked at Heathcliff, expecting to find him asleep, only to find him looking at him in wonder. “What?” he asked. “You have a beautiful voice, Lucien,” Heathcliff told him. Lucien blushed and ducked his head. “Thank you,” he whispered. Heathcliff’s fingers under his chin brought his face back up, and he found himself looking into Heathcliff’s eyes. “Don’t do that. Don’t hide from me. Never hide from me,” Heathcliff told him. “You have a beautiful voice. One that has obviously been handcrafted by the very touch of God. The beauty of your voice is rivaled only by the beauty of your face, which does not compare to the beauty of your spirit.”

Chance to be King

About The Book

2nd Edition

After working nonstop for two years, actor Eric Pawlowski desperately needs a respite from his grueling schedule and the crippling migraines that come with it. Thinking that a few weeks in a secluded cottage is just the thing, his vacation gets off to a rough start when he almost mows down the only other guy who lives on the remote road. Fortunately Thomas is quick to forgive, and soon he, Eric, and Eric’s two dogs are palling around like they’ve known each other for years.

But when Eric witnesses Thomas coldly order a lost stranger off his property, he starts to question how well he knows him. Despite a mutual attraction that has Eric cursing every time a well-meaning member of the nearby small town interrupts their attempts to get intimate, Eric wonders if acting on his desire for Thomas will get him involved in a situation he shouldn’t be in. When his rented cabin catches fire in the middle of the night and the firemen call it arson, it confirms Eric’s suspicions.

To keep Eric with him, it’s up to Thomas to come clean about who he is… and his involvement in a decade-old web of tragedy and revenge into which Eric has unwittingly walked.

Excerpt

“So… you’re Sky Davies, huh?”

Worried, Eric twisted to look over his shoulder at Thomas. “Is that a problem?”

Thomas looked up and caught his eye. “Not really, I guess. I can understand why you kept it quiet. Ted and Mark will be discreet. They have good practice at that,” he said cryptically as he patted Eric’s shoulder gently. “All finished.”

“Have you seen any of my films?” Eric asked as he put his T-shirt back on. His skin did feel soothed, and he made a mental note to get some of that cream for future use.

“Most of them, actually. I just didn’t put two and two together.” Eric looked at Thomas incredulously. “What? I’m not completely isolated here. We do have a movie theatre nearby.” Thomas seemed almost defensive.

“I wouldn’t have thought action films were quite your style.”

“I may be queer, but I’m still a guy. I like explosions as much as the next man. I suppose you think I’m into arty French films?”

No. Well, yes. But actually, Eric had got stuck on “queer” and hadn’t really moved past that. “So you’re gay?”

“Yes. Yes, I am. Is that a problem?” Thomas’s voice had hardened, and he sat back on his heels, a frown marring his face.

“No.” Thomas didn’t look convinced by Eric’s denial. “Honestly, Tom, it’s not a problem. I’m gay too.”

Thomas nodded slowly, and his eyes softened a little. “You flirted with me. I was pretty sure you were, but we didn’t really get that far.”

“I don’t make an issue of it. You know what Hollywood is like.” For some reason Eric felt the need to justify himself. “Are you in a relationship?” Thomas asked bluntly. The way his gaze focused on Eric intently made Eric feel the question was significant.

Eric gave Thomas a direct look. “No, I’m not. I haven’t been for a long time. I’ve been too busy with my career and, well, it’s not easy being in a long-term straight relationship in my business, let alone a gay one.”

“I guess.” Thomas got off the floor and wiped his hands on some tissues before sitting back on the sofa with his cup of coffee.

Eric thought it was time for some direct questions of his own. “What about you? Are you seeing someone?” Shaking his head, Thomas said, “No, and like you, I haven’t been for a while. A long while. Been a few one-night stands, though.”

Confessions on the table, they looked at each other, a little shy now they had admitted they were free and single. Eric was about to say something when his stomach got there first. The rumble broke the uncomfortable silence and made them both laugh.

“Guess I should be feeding you that steak before your dogs get there first.” Thomas got up and held out a hand to Eric. “Come on, let’s feed you, big man.”

About the author:

Taylin Clavelli lives in the United Kingdom, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, and a short journey from the world famous Cadbury’s Chocolate factory. She’s married with children and loves her family with all her heart.
Her love of books has been a long standing affair, with Taylin liking nothing better than to lose herself in an imaginary world.
Until she met Lily Velden, she never considered trying her hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged her to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, she hasn’t stopped. Her confidence eventually led to her writing an original work for submission.
Her first published work was Boys, Toys, and Carpet Fitters, developed for the Dreamspinner Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home.
Now she absolutely adores immersing herself into the characters she creates, and transferring the pictures in her brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.
Outside of writing, her interests include; martial arts (she’s a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do), horse-riding, all of which facilitates her love of a wide variety of movies. Her action heroes include Jet Li and Tony Jaa—finding the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill both amazing and a privilege to watch. If pressed, she’ll admit to thinking that the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. Her all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
The simple things in life that make her day, putting a smile on her face are:

Laughter – especially that of her children.
The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes her mouth salivate.
The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Old houses hide secrets, sometimes dark ones.

In the 1970’s, London based family, Marjorie, Stanley and their theatrically bent son fall in love with a dilapidated Victorian seaside villa.  Dreaming of a better life by the sea, they transform the property into a luxury guesthouse, ignorant of the tragic events that occurred there at the beginning of the century.  They discover that their guests are not the only other occupants in the building.

The souls trapped within the house offer the temptation of wealth and power, but all come with a deadly price.  Stanley, supported by his ambitious wife, enters political office. Marjorie will stop at nothing to achieve her goals for her husband, no matter who gets in the way.

Thirty years later, an affluent gay couple, Jez and Graham, purchase the hotel, which now unoccupied has once again fallen into disrepair.  They are blissfully unaware of the building’s grisly past.  Jez falls under the influence of the spirits within the house, rapidly achieving fame, fortune, and a life beyond his wildest imagination, but the price is ultimately the corruption of his very soul.

Bound by a common destiny, both Marjorie and Jez’s fates lie inextricably intertwined across time and connected to the house.  Their gruesome realisation is that death is not necessarily a release.

Author Bio:

I am a gay man in my early forties.  I escaped the London rat race by buying a small hotel in the beautiful coastal town of Torquay, England with my civil partner.  My career has been in business but I have written articles on a freelance basis for a gay website that is part of the Gaydar group.  I am passionate about reading and writing and try to squeeze both into my busy week.  My hobbies include watching films, travelling and I am a keep-fit fanatic.  The hotel provides me with a constant source of writing material, given my interactions with the weird and wonderful British public.  I served briefly as a police officer in London and considered writing a story about this, but I do not think anyone would believe me.  I am an alumnus from the great seat of learning known as Portsmouth University.

See the hotel Ian owns!

Excerpt:

I write this book in my twilight years. Though considerable time has passed since these tragic events occurred, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be controversial. Some people will suspect me of profiteering. However, if I am privileged enough to see this work published, then I will donate any proceeds to the affected surviving family members. The money would be of little use to me now, as I am elderly, and I have no heirs.

Perhaps writing this is a form of therapy, a way to assuage my own guilt. Goodness knows, I have spent much time reflecting on the ‘what ifs.’ Over the years, I have learned to forgive myself the errors of my past. However, I will never forget the pain that I have caused others through my poor decisions.

Title: Stars Fall
Author: Louis Harris

Blurb:
Keegan Mansfield is a loner.
A bilateral amputee athlete.
With only one goal; to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games. Every move he makes is towards this dream, and even though there are forces trying to stop him, he moves forward because there’s too much at stake. Although he has the determination and the will to succeed, he is dependent on others and there are ingredients missing from his life that he so desperately needs.
Truth, love and happiness.
When team mate Conrad Smith saves him from a violent incident, both embark on a journey of love that would lead to the truth about Keegan’s past and a happiness that will last for only a moment, and a tragedy that will bring them closer, as one, for neither can live without the other. And, just as things seemed as bad as they could get, Keegan learns an important lesson, that trust is not a game, trust is as real as day and night, as real as the wind. He learns, through tragedy, that Rio comes with the sacrifice of his dependency on others. He learns that true love thrives on togetherness.

Excerpt:
Not many people invited Keegan out.  There was the time that Patrick invited him to play ten pin bowling and the time that he and Jean went to movies at Sandton City.  It was difficult for him to get around.  Not having a car inhibited his movements.  He would dearly love to go out more often but it was no fault of his that he did not have transport.  He couldn’t afford it on his bursary.  Having to rely on others for transport meant that he would have to schedule lifts to and from varsity, to and from practice, to and from competitions.  It wasn’t easy.  It felt as if he owed the whole world favours.

The first thing that surprised him was that Conrad opened the car door for him.  Nice touch.  Gentlemanly.  From that moment Keegan held a new respect for him.  It felt like he was being courted.

‘Hey handsome, you’re looking good. How’s the elbow?’ Conrad said.

‘I washed it properly in the bath and applied more disinfectant.  Hurts a little but otherwise it’s just fine. You look different.’

‘Must be the hair.’

‘Actually, brush-cut suits you.  Brings out your brown eyes.  You look like an American Marine.’

‘My hairdresser was surprised when I told her I wanted a brush cut.  You know what she said?’

‘Tell me.’

‘She said that such a change means that something drastic had happened in my life.’

‘She said that?’

‘Yup.  I told her I don’t really think the word is drastic as much as fantastic.’

‘You said that?  So what did you mean?’

‘I meant you.  I never once thought you and I would be friends.  I think that’s fantastic.’

Keegan’s face burned from the compliment. ‘Well, that’s…that’s…thank you.  The feeling is mutual,’ he said.

Conrad shut the passenger door and climbed into the driver’s side of the vehicle. ‘Your chest still hurting?’

“A little.  Not much.’

‘I wish it was me that Marx beat on.’

That statement was enough to send Keegan’s mind into overdrive.  Guy friends didn’t say that to each other.  Well, they did, especially if there’s caring involved.  And then Conrad said something even stranger.

‘It hurts me to see you in pain, bro.’

‘Believe me, you don’t want to be on the receiving end of Marx’s punches.  Not cool.  So where are we going?  What do you have in mind?’

‘A quiet supper.  Just the two of us.’

‘Sounds cool.’

‘You don’t mind me taking you out for supper?’

‘It’s not like we’re on a date, right?  I mean, we’re just two guys enjoying supper, right?’

‘Yes.  On both counts.  Just two guys enjoying good food.  Guy bonding.  Bronding. Nothing more.’ Conrad laughed at the word he had just coined.

‘Then why would you ask if I mind?’

Keegan found out very quickly why Conrad had asked him that question

The restaurant, settled in a neat suburb just off the main highway, was dressed in warmth and the smell of Italian cooking from the kitchen.  Their small booth had been set with a candle lit table and a violinist played Moon River for them as they entered.  Keegan smiled at the maître d’ as he invited them to be seated.

‘I’ll leave you for a few moments, Conrad,’ the maître d’ said.

‘Thank you, Simon.’

As Keegan sat down, he said, ‘You’ve been here before?’

‘My favourite restaurant would you guess?’

‘Never have guessed.’ Keegan laughed.

‘Simon is my aunt’s husband.  They own this place.’

‘I guess it’s always better to have a connection in the restaurant business.  This is nice, Conrad.  Too nice.  I can’t afford to eat in a place like this.’

‘Who said anything about paying?’

‘I can’t expect you to pay for this, bro.’

‘I asked you out.  It’s on me.  All I want is for you to enjoy.’

Keegan smiled at him with a softness in his eyes.  An appreciation. ‘Next time it’s on me.’

‘Yup.  And I don’t mind KFC.’

Both of them laughed and from that moment the evening turned into one filled with music, wine and good Italian cuisine.

Getting to know a person is always like finding a new product.  That may sound beaten and clichéd but it’s true.  As the evening wore on, they spoke about life and the universe, and special friends and what friendship meant to them.

‘Do you have a special lady?’ Keegan asked.

‘A special lady, you mean as in girlfriend?’

‘Yes.’

‘No.  Nothing like that. I can’t afford a girl.  That’s not to say that I haven’t ever had a girlfriend.  I have.  Didn’t turn out well at all.’

‘Sorry.  I’m prying here.’

‘Not at all.  We had a so-so relationship right from the start.  My brother asked us to babysit for him once.  That night we had sex.  Embarrassing for me, but not for her apparently.  I was a virgin.  Had no idea what to do.  I know I didn’t cum inside her.  So when she told my family that she was pregnant, I almost married her.  She didn’t tell me first.  She ran to my mom and told her instead and before I knew it I was hauled over the coals by everyone.  But my mom insisted that she be tested before I committed.  Thankfully the test came back negative.  I wasn’t ready for a family.  Damn, at 18, who is?  Anyway, we went on a last date.  It was then I told her that we weren’t ready for each other.  She asked why and I told her the truth.’

‘What did you tell her?’

‘I told her I had feelings for guys.  I simply wanted to sleep with her to see if I could sleep with a woman.’

‘You said that? Selfish, don’t you think.’

‘No.  I knew I would never marry her.  But at the same time I felt as though she tried to trap me.’

‘What did she say when you told her you’re gay?’

‘She cried, she said all of her boyfriends had told her that they were gay.’

‘You’re not serious.’

‘In a way it was so funny.  In another it was damned sad, but that ended our relationship.  Now, what about you?  Tell me about Jean.’

‘She looks after me, there’s no doubt about that.  Helps me whenever she can.  Transport that kind of thing.’

‘You have any special feelings for her?’

‘You mean is she my girlfriend?’

‘I could have asked if you sleep with her.’

‘I do not sleep with Jean.  We don’t have that kind of relationship. It’s platonic.  All platonic.’

‘Maybe from your side, but from what I’ve seen, I think she wants more than just a friendship.’

‘It’s not going to happen.’

‘And what do you think of me?’

Keegan sipped at his wine. ‘I think you’re amazing. And this….all this…is very special. You care. You’re a fine guy, Mr Smith, and I’m happy that you and I are friends.’

Conrad responded by turning away from Keegan’s gaze.  The sadness in his face caught in the light.

‘Wanna tell me about what you’re thinking?’ Keegan asked.

‘I…I was kind of hoping that….I don’t know, I’m being very unreasonable…’

‘Hoping what?’

‘That you…that you were attracted to me in some way.  I’ve watched you since you were a freshman and always been too scared to approach you.  Now that we’re finally friends, I’ve gone and fucked it up.’

Keegan held his glass to his lips for a moment while Conrad’s brown eyes searched for an honest answer.  Keegan had observed his directness earlier that day; he had displayed humility, subtlety and tact.  Coming to Keegan’s rescue earlier required an impulsive, positive and self-confident nature.  Keegan was attracted to that.

Keegan reached for Conrad’s hand and held it gently. ‘No…no… don’t think like that Conrad.  I just have to discover what it is that’s stopping me from having a relationship. It’s bugged me for years.’

Conrad held his hand tighter. ‘I’m hitting on you and I don’t want to scare you and if you think I’m coming on too strong, just say so and I’ll back off.  Can I be perfectly honest with you?’

‘I wouldn’t expect it any other way.’

‘I looked at you today in the locker room when I helped you fit your prosthetics, and I noticed that…’

‘What did you notice?’

‘I could have sworn you had a semi hard-on.’

A moment of silence followed.

‘I did?’ Keegan knew he had had a semi hard on.  He played it coy.

‘I would like to think that I can make you feel that way again.’

‘I need time for this to register, I had no idea you felt this way about me.’

‘Then time I will give you. But, I’m not going to stop thinking about you, and I’m not going to stop touching you.’ Conrad said, his hand slid over Keegan’s gently, and when Simon approached to take their order, he didn’t remove it.

‘I think I can handle that.’ Keegan said breathlessly, his heart throbbing.  The fullness of his cock wanting escape.

Blurb:

Who knew that a summer thunderstorm and his lost little boy would conspire to change single dad Cayce D’Amico’s life in an instant? With Luke missing, Cayce ventures into the woods near their house to find his son, only to have lightning strike a tree near him, sending a branch down on his head. When he awakens the next day in the hospital, he discovers he has been blessed or cursed—he isn’t sure which—with psychic ability. Along with unfathomable glimpses into the lives of those around him, he’s getting visions of a missing teenage girl.

When a second girl disappears soon after the first, Cayce realizes his visions are leading him to their grisly fates. Cayce wants to help, but no one believes him. The police are suspicious. The press wants to exploit him. And the girls’ parents have mixed feelings about the young man with the “third eye.”

Cayce turns to local reporter Dave Newton and, while searching for clues to the string of disappearances and possible murders, a spark ignites between the two. Little do they know that nearby, another couple—dark and murderous—are plotting more crimes and wondering how to silence the man who knows too much about them.

Excerpt:

Cayce was just about to put the paper aside when another article—and a familiar name in the byline—caught his eye. “Teenager Reported Missing,” by Dave Newton. It wasn’t so much the headline that got his attention but the picture of the young girl beneath it. Pretty. Long blonde hair. And disturbingly familiar.

Even though Fawcettville was a small town, the girl’s name, Lucy Plant, didn’t ring any bells. Perhaps Cayce had waited on her at the Elite, the diner where he worked. But still, no specific recollection came back. Cayce couldn’t visualize the girl sitting at the counter, nor at one of the booths.

And yet she looked so familiar, as if she were someone Cayce was friends with, or even a relative.

Cayce scanned the story. The girl had been reported missing by her mother yesterday afternoon, just before the storm that had caused such a turn in Cayce’s own life.

There were no clues. The girl, at least according to her mother, could not possibly have been a runaway. “Lucy’s a good girl,” Amy Plant had told Fawcettville police detective JT Simmons. “She wouldn’t even go down the block to visit a friend without telling us first.”

The last time anyone had seen Lucy Plant was when her mother looked outside the living room window. Lucy had been playing with her Barbie dolls on the front lawn.

Cayce closed his eyes. He remembered, suddenly, the storm coming, and not knowing where Luke was. He sympathized with the girl’s mother and the panic she must have felt when she couldn’t locate her daughter.

A ceiling fan. Beneath his closed lids, Cayce saw a ceiling fan. He didn’t know why. He didn’t own one himself, and the one in his parents’ living room was an entirely different model from this one, which was white, with a plain globe. His parents’ fan had four frosted-glass light fixtures and faux wood blades.

Cayce kept his eyes closed, watching the ceiling fan whirl, its blades blurring and becoming singular. There was something wrong with the fan. It didn’t work quite right.

Cayce felt nauseated and opened his eyes. His face was glazed with sweat. His stomach churned, and he was afraid he would vomit. Why was seeing a ceiling fan so disturbing? Or was this some sort of aftershock, an effect of his accident?

Cayce didn’t think so.

He glanced down at the face of Lucy Plant and sucked in some air. “Oh my God,” he whispered, “she’s dead.”

Excerpt

“NOW, Sebastian, dear, I want you to promise me you’ll mind your Ps and Qs.”

“Oh, I don’t think you need to worry about that, Mom. I don’t think they let you swear on prime time telly.”

“Well, I certainly hope not, dear, because I have not only Granny May coming but also Nanna Robson. And then there’s Uncle Phil and his wife, Delores, and you know how Old School she is. If she had her way, we’d still be living in the Victorian era. Honestly, I’m sure she has a pole lodged up… well, never you mind, you know how she can be. And Grandpa Robson would be most upset if he heard you blaspheming and making a mockery of the Queen’s English on the telly.”

“Mom—”

“Aunt Sue and Uncle Tom are coming up from Birmingham, and bringing the twins with them. Ned is coming, too. He’s bringing that floozie he’s been dilly dallying with since the divorce. I thought that would stop Cheryl coming, but, God love her, she says she doesn’t care and that she’s bringing a male friend. Is that what they’re calling a boyfriend these days? A male friend? God only knows who it is. She says we don’t know him. I do so hope he’s a nice lad, though. She deserves someone nice after the run-around Ned gave her. Between you and me, if he wasn’t my cousin, I’d give him a clip around the ears. I just hope your brother Jordy doesn’t say something to him. I don’t want them spoiling your night. And Carol—you remember Carol, don’t you? From bingo?—well, she’s coming with her new bloke, and—”

“Jesus fucking Christ, Mom! Who didn’t you invite?”

“Father Henderson, which is probably just as well if you’re going to take the Lord’s name in vain and swear like a trooper, Sebastian.”

I flushed—not even the ten or fifteen thousand miles and God only knew how many seas and oceans that separated Sydney from the UK managed to dim my mother’s ability to reduce me to feeling like a ten-year-old again.

“Sorry, Mom, but, jeez, it sounds like the entire extended family and half of Yorkshire are going to be watching.”

“Well, Aunt Peg said she can’t because she has to work, though I promised her we’d record it, but other than that….”

I groaned. I was going to shoot Declan. How could he run off and tell my mom about my going on Written in the Stars? How could he offer to livestream it to her? He knew what she was like. Come the fourteenth of February, my humiliation would be complete. I’d never be able to return to the UK.

About the author:

Lily Velden lives on the east coast of Australia, her family having emigrated from Holland when she was a child.

She’s both a left and right brain person, holding qualifications in both Finance and Fine Arts. She tells her friends that her way with numbers will make her a profitable artist and writer… one day.

Lily has always had a love of language and a beautifully crafted sentence, and admits to having a fetish for collecting quotes, poems, and song lyrics. What she won’t admit to is how many notebooks she’s filled with those quotes… Her fascination carries on into her artworks where she often incorporates text. When a shoulder injury slowed down her art practice she decided to explore her love of the written word more fully and began writing. “I’ll paint my pictures with words.”

Not that she’s abandoned artmaking in its entirety—Lily collaborates on the designs for all her book covers.

There are many things Lily loves, here are just a few of the PG rated ones: a good laugh (all the better if caused by a naughty joke), the smell of freshly baked goods and mown grass, a smile from a stranger, rainbows after the rain, and witnessing a promise kept.
