I forgot about this yesterday so I’ll have to do some catching up with all the fabulous snippets posted on the Facebook Group where a collection of authors – about 30 of them – post approx six sentences of published books or works in progress with LGBTQA protagonists. If you’d like to see some too, click the little picture above and look for the pinned post.
I’m continuing with Calon Lan, a story set during the Great War about a gay love affair observed by the naive sister of one of the protagonists, but wonder if you’d like a change for next week? I can offer historical or contemporary, published and waaaay more unpublished. Or I can carry on with this one.
[Bethan] also hoped God would forgive her for hating the war – this justified war, because one could not give in to bullies and barbarians – and hating what it had done to her menfolk. Alwyn’s wounds were easy to see, but Nye carried his own hurts. On market day or on Sunday after chapel, people talk and don’t always look round to see who is near before they speak and Bethan had heard things said, some hard and some sneering. She had no doubts, none at all, but there were those who speculated that Nye might have been a bit too quick to agree to stay behind. The day was sharp in her mind, when Alwyn had said, “One of us should go, so let it be me.” His smile had been so merry. “It’s the only chance I’ll ever get to see France and I promise I’ll be back in time for lambing!”
so sad…
Oh it was. So many tragic stories.
I love stories of WW1. Interesting to see the leads from Bethan’s POV.
Thanks alexa. I thought it might be a bit different.
I vote to stay with this. I want to meet the friend that’s coming!
And what an awesome snippet — gives great insight into Nye.
thanks PT. If I keep going six by six as they come it’ll be *counts* about another 8 weeks until the friend turns up in person.
I’m good with whatever you’d like to share. I really liked this bit with Nye.
Thanks Jana.
Gosh war stories hurt my heart^^ I’d keep posting this one 😉
Thanks Suki. Yes, they are so sad, but I think they make it easier to remember. The true stories are too heartbreaking
A very moving piece.
Thanks Stevie.
I vote for more of this one, because I’m loving every glimpse you give of it. This was lovely again, just quietly reminding us of the small hurts as well as the great tragedies of the war.
Thanks Amy. 🙂 I’ve got about 4k words of the story so far so that should last until the summer.
So tragic. I vote for more of this. I love these characters.
Thanks Dianne. I hope you like Joe when he turns up. I have a soft spot for him and Alwyn.
I love all of your writing but since you asked i’d like more of this story! Love Bethan’s voice! Another vote for letting us meet the friend, too. 🙂
Thanks my lovely. the friend will make his appearance in about 8 weeks if I keep on the way I’m going.
Ouch. What a choice to have to make.
I honestly think they felt it was a great adventure and opportunity. My grandpa and a bunch of his mates ran down to the recruiting office and joined up in their lunch break and they really thought they’d be home by Christmas. Poor poor boys.
I’m enjoying Bethan’s voice and these snippets. So moving.
Thanks Antonia. I’ll stick with this story then. 🙂
