Please note: The #HAHAT blog hop continues until 27th of May so you still have 5 days to read some terrific posts and maybe win prizes by commenting. My post is here with links to the rest of the blogs.
It’s humpday again, medears. this means bouncing around from blog to blog reading hooks from published works and WIPs provided by authors just because they can!
If you go here you can reach all the other authors. On the other hand you could stay and read my hook first. There’ll be another link at the bottom to save your scrolling digit.

This ‘banyan’ is what Aubrey would be wearing
Photo from Brighton Pavilion.
Last week in my except from an untitled Regency Romance pastiche, Lady Cicely Stanton-Rivers took the news that her brother had lost her while playing vingt-un very well considering and little bro’, Aubrey, earned your undying hatred. This week’s excerpt carries on from last week’s.
~~~
“Me!” Cicely bounced to her feet. “You lost me? Good grief, Aubrey, you can’t go round losing people! This isn’t the colonies, you know.”
“I know, I’m sorry but …”
“Am I permitted to know to whom you lost me?” Cicely demanded.
“Chum Armstrong. He put up his grey, Mandrake, so I…”
“So I am worth approximately the same as a flea-bitten grey nag. Words fail me, Aubrey!”
~~~
Experimenting this week with making the hook conform to the group ethos – one paragraph only, unless it’s dialogue, and keep it short. So no proper hook. Sorry guys – the next hook was another 90 words down the page.
I am waiting for her to slap him! For a horse?? He is begging to feel her handprint across his cheek!
And don’t worry, it IS an awesome hook! 😀
It’s still a hook!! Well done. 😀 I want to know why he felt the nag was so important and if she will forgive him!
this isn’t the colonies you know! – just love your wit
Love it and I love this photo I ant this myself lol!
I’d be ready to beat him if I were Cecily. Great hook! 🙂
Slug him, Cecily! For a horse?! I’d be just as cross with whomever he lost me to, though. He only thought she was worth a horse, too!
She’s taking this a whole lot better than I would. This isn’t my usual genre, but I want to read this book!
“Cicely bounced to her feet”. I can imagine. Great hook, Elin. I’m loving this. 😃
What a brave soul Aubrey must be to provoke his sister like that…or stupid, lol. Get ‘im, Cicely! This was a great hook. I love the bit of humor you snuck in there.
Ooh, I’d be mad!! Great hook 🙂
Oh dear…
Great hook there.
I thought it was a great hook and love the colonies line!
“This isn’t the colonies, you know.” LOL!
