And another Sunday rolls around. Blimey where is this year going to?
For those who don’t know – which will be hardly any of you – Six Sentence Sunday is an authorial blog hop that gives one the opportunity to read a little of an awful lot of different works. It’s good fun and I’ve met some super people while doing it. You may find the links here if you want to poke around amongst them.
Here is my offering. Another bit of A Fierce Reaping. Winter is drawing in and Cynfal is worried about Aeddan.
~~~
Cynfal scraped together enough firewood to heat the mess through β mostly pinecones and bundles of birch twigs β and fetched water while Aeddan sulked in the bothy. He was definitely off colour and bad tempered with it. Cynfal was reminded of an old hound with an abcess brewing. There was no outward sign and much of the time he carried on as normal, but he was sometimes more abrupt and could snap if touched on the wrong spot. At the moment Aeddan didnβt suffer fools gladly, and that was odd. He normally liked having someone to make fun of.
Love the vivid descriptions in the excerpt. Great job!
Thanks, Dara. π
Gah! Anger that has time to gather heat usually explodes! Great tension and metaphor!
Aeddan has issues, poor soul. I hope it will be a bit of a booom when they are resolved. Thank for commenting.
I love the “old hound” analogy. Could I offer a suggestion? Maybe the line about being off colour and bad tempered could be nixed, because I think that visual of the hound is stronger. I read that and immediately connected with Aeddan’s ill humour.
I know you’ve posted longer excerpts and those are pretty cool. I like being able to read more in one sitting. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Marcia. Yes, spot on. That sentence is unnecessary. Actually I’m being really cheeky here and putting this story down almost as I blurted it out during Nano last November. I just iron out the worst of the atrocities. π I hope the finished article will be a bit more streamlined.
I’m glad you like the longer bits but I can’t do too many. I’d like to publish this some day and posting too much of it might jeopardise that.
great analogy with the old hound with an abcess, it really helps encapsulate Aeddan’s mood, well done!
Hmm, it sounds like he caught the same bug I had last fall. You’ve nailed my attitude during the period of time perfectly, though the people in my life weren’t nearly as tolerant as Cynfel. My loved ones opted to steer clear of me. Great, organic, six Elin!
A very descriptive six! Well done.
Fab as usual, Elin!
Excellent description in this! Very vivid, and i agree, the hound with an abscess shows very well Aeddan’s mood. Great six!
Nice job of capturing Aeddan’s mood, but I find myself wondering which meaning of “mess” you meant. Mess hall? Mess of stuff to be cooked? Just plain mess?
I have found so many fascinating writers through Six Sunday. I must read more!
Missed you last week but went back and read. LOVED the longer excerpt on A FIERCE REAPING. And congrats on the pirate book. Whoohoo!. As for this weeks entry? Ahhh, Cynfal. And Aeddan. Love how you describe Aeddan’s mood, and the hint of illness. I love the way you string words together, Elin. I truly do.
His worry shows. And what’s up with Aeddan? Nice six! π
Nice six Elin. I really like Cynfal – the way he can snap if touched the wrong way. He sounds like my character Ryan. Keep them coming, this is a great story!
Am enjoying your sixes, Elin. I, too, liked the “old hound with an abscess brewing” comment, and wonder about Aeddan’s mood. Looking forward to more!
Love the vivid description! The hound with an abscess definitely gives the reader an idea of Aeddanβs mood. Great six!!
Hmmmm. Doesn’t sound like a very nice person. Thanks for sharing the “Six”
Great imagery and analogy there.
Great details here; the comparison between Aeddan and the dog is perfect, both for the comparing and the tone of your story. You’ve got a wonderful handle on this world.
Love the hound/abscess description, and giggled about how he wasn’t about to suffer fools, which was unusual because he normally liked to make fun of others! GREAT six, nice work! I, as always, enjoyed the read!
Sulked in a bothy — I’ve never heard that expression before. Well he’s moody, isn’t he? I like the personality contrasts!
Me too–loved the hound and abscess analogy. π Great atmosphere. You leave no doubt for the reader, the mood of Aeddan. Nice six π
Lovely scene. I liked the dog with the abscess, but my fave was definitely the last two sentences. Clearly he’s not right if he doesn’t want to make fun of someone. LOL
fantastic analogy π nice six!
Great scene, Elin. I like the comparison to the hound with an abcess as the others do. It’s an elegant way of establishing the mood of this scene.
p.s. My passed/past problem is one of plot, not language, but you knew that. Lol
I absolutely love the picture you create!! Great six.
Excellent imagery…I’ll be back to see what happens next week!
Old Hounds with abscesses brewingβ¦ sounds like someone should be avoided for a while. π Vivid six, Elin!
Really great description in just a few sentences. Nice six!
I wonder what’s wrong with him? Now I’m worried. Cynfal has enough to worry about.
P.S. When do we get to read some about the pirates?! π
Very nice, Elin! The hound dog analogy reminded me of an old hound my dad had – grouchy old thing would play with the kids and pups, but if someone touched her tail, she’d nail them. Good thing she didn’t have any teeth left, LOL.
Moody, vivid piece. I love following this story!
