Sucking in the Gut
~ a guest post by Anna Butler

We live in great times for gay fiction. The ‘niche’ is pushing back boundaries all over the place. It’s a big and expanding market. I suspect there are now far more readers of gay-themed stories than there are for genres such as the classic western, say. As a genre it’s out and proud, and proudly getting bigger.

And the biggest driver behind this surge is m/m romance.

The romance genre generally is huge. It stands to reason the m/m element is huge too. Readers of m/m romance have certain expectations. That’s not unreasonable. They’re the same expectations I have myself when I’m reading a romance—I want to see two men attracted to each other, overcoming some obstacle to being together, having sizzling sex, being faithful and loving. And at the very least, the book must close with a Happy-For-Now ending even if the story can’t quite make it Happy Ever After. En route they can have all sorts of things happen: murders, mystery, mayhem. Doesn’t matter. What matters is they’re together and I can put the book down feeling good about the outcome.

But this is where it gets a little sticky for me. If you’re looking for pure romance, then I have to confess that neither Gyrfalcon, which is published today, nor any other book in the Taking Shield series, will give you it. Shield isn’t romance. It *is* a love story—a very deep and, at times, intense love story—that covers six years of interstellar war and billions of miles of space travel. This is space saga stuff. All the staples of old school sci-fi are here, too: big spaceships, infiltrations of Maess bases, cool Shield suits, and lots of people running around shooting their lasers.

And it has men in love. Oh wait. Not so old school as all that, maybe.

Across the whole of the Taking Shield series, there are two main story themes, intertwining with each other: the war against the Maess and Shield Captain Bennet’s efforts to prevent the destruction of humanity, and, set against that, the way his life is turned upside down by that intoxicating temptation aka Fleet Lieutenant Flynn. The Maess war and everything Bennet has to do there gets equal billing with the slow unfolding of his relationship with Flynn.

So if romance is driving the great surge in gay writing, where does something like this fit? It’s a niche within a niche market. And here am I, sucking in the gut like whoa so I can wriggle my way in sideways.

Oh, but I hope you find it’s worth the effort to wriggle. If you like big sweeping sagas, big love stories where the obstacles the heroes face a big and sweeping too, I do hope you’ll give Bennet and Flynn a try. They aren’t perfect, but a couple of guys with all their warts and faults, all their brilliance and intelligence, all their courage and loyalty and great hearts, all their beauty and all their ugliness—and they love each other. They love each other a great deal, despite every parting, and every reverse and upset in their relationship. And perhaps one day, at the end of everything, they’ll get the chance they deserve.

Do come on the journey with them. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

GYRFALCON is published today by Wilde City.

Earth’s last known colony, Albion, is fighting an alien enemy. In the first of the Taking Shield series, Shield Captain Bennet is dropped behind the lines to steal priceless intelligence. A dangerous job, and Bennet doesn’t need the distractions of changing relationships with his long-term partner, Joss, or with his father—or with Flynn, the new lover who will turn his world upside-down. He expects to risk his life. He expects the data will alter the course of the war. What he doesn’t expect is that it will change his life or that Flynn will be impossible to forget.

EXCERPT

 As advertised, the Shield officer was proving to be the enigma that everyone had expected.

Flynn had worked it that first briefing so he got a good look before anyone else. He liked what he saw. In his black uniform, the Shield captain stood out in the crowd of Fleet pale grey. Everything about the Shield rig was plain. The rank pips in the stand-up collar of the tunic under his flight jacket were a dull silver, and only about half the size of the ones Simonitz wore. There wasn’t a medal ribbon in sight. Only the tiny, ornate Shield badge at his throat was a bright silver.

The monochromatic look suited the Shield captain, matching his black hair and the pale grey eyes. The captain’s hair had more cowlicks than a field full of heifers, spiking up despite it being worn longer than was strictly regulation. Flynn took note, too, of cheekbones so sharply defined that they looked like they’d been machine cut, and a strong mouth. The face was youthful, except for the eyes. They’d seen a lot. Altogether, the Shield captain was definitely one of the pretty people in life. Almost as pretty as Flynn himself.

Cruz, to whom he imparted this insight in the OC after Bennet’s first visit, rolled her eyes so hard it was a wonder the girl didn’t have to grope about on the deck for them. She had never appreciated his true worth. He had to guilt her into buying him a beer in reparation.

He sipped his beer appreciatively. It always tasted better when someone else was paying. “What d’you think of him?”

“Seems pleasant enough.” Cruz shrugged. “He didn’t tell us much, though. I didn’t think he would.”

“No. And that first briefing was a bit basic. Wonder what he was fishing for there.”

“We’ll likely find out in time,” said Cruz.

“I’d rather know now.” Flynn took a pull on his beer. “Simonitz doesn’t like him.”

“Did Sim ever apply for Shield?”

“You picked up on that too, did you? I don’t know, but there were a few hints there. I thought the Shield was pretty gracious about it, with Sim sitting there glowering all night.”

Cruz nodded. After a minute, she said, “He was good with Nairn, taking him seriously. Some people might have laughed or slapped the kid down.”

“Nairn’s a question mark on legs, some days.”

“He’s young for his age.”

“And getting a severe case of hero worship,” Flynn said, laughing.

Cruz looked at Flynn, brown eyes warm with affection and amusement. “He’s not the only one, I’d say.” She smiled. “Would you?”

Title: Escaping From Him

Author:Liam Livings

Publisher: Manifold Press

Word Count: 51k

Escaping FRom Him

Blurb:

Darryl’s on the run – from controlling boyfriend Chris, an air-conditioner called Dave (deceased), an intolerable, claustrophobic situation and a person he just can’t be any more. The trouble is, he doesn’t have a plan – or any money – and all he knows is he needs to get away from everything. That’s where a lucky lift to Glasgow comes in, which turns out to be just the beginning of a whole new life …

Who was your favourite character to write in Escaping From Him?

I enjoyed writing all the characters, that’s like asking to pick a favourite child or pet! Oh well, if I must, I must…

Darryl was good fun to write as he finally got the courage and gumption to escape from his life with Chris. I enjoyed writing about how he literally rebuilds himself when he gets to Scotland, a new group of friends, a new job, a new place to stay, and a boyfriend too. Writing about how he integrates himself into the new world of the clubs and pubs in Scotland was fun, how he gradually gets more confidence as he’s away from Chris for longer.

Lena was enjoyable to write too, I liked how she’s so matter of fact, and doesn’t pull any punches when she gives people her opinions. She’s also a very confident and driver person. In my mind she was a cross between Robyn and P!nk, a sort of no nonsense go getter in bondage gear with a savage creative streak, and a wonderful sense of fun. I enjoyed writing her friendship and love and support for Darryl, how she really cares for him and his happiness. I suppose that’s all anyone wants from a friend really.

*hiding behind his hands* I feel bad, but Chris was actually quite fun to write. There was something quite fun about writing how vile opinions and things he had said to Darryl, I quite enjoyed. I think it’s because it’s so not me in any way at all. He epitomises the sort of person who doesn’t *get* creativity at all. Why would you take pictures for a living and own cheap car when you could work doing something much higher paid and afford the latest Mini Cooper or BMW? He’s the sort of person who’d pick up a painting and question its price, while happily spending almost that much money on a meal to celebrate his latest sales target. Before everyone comes down on me like a tonne of bricks, I’m not anti estate agents or sales targets or people working for money because that’s what makes them happy, what I’m anti is people who think that’s the *only* way to be. People who can’t understand how someone else won’t be happy by buying the latest new electronic gadget, and would prefer to paint a picture or go for a walk in the forest instead.

EXTRACT – Darryl and Lena talk about Chris and how Sweden has one of the highest rates of suicide in Europe

Lena slapped my shoulder. “All these Swedish people throwing their lives away, but at least they make a decision to actually throw it away. Some people live their life, by half living it, and they are not happy. So which is the worst, ending it, or carry on live it and not live it right”

I smiled at her slightly broken English, but I got her point. Her carefully enunciated words put my West Country burr to shame.

“Darryl, I love you. You know this. But every time it is the same thing. Chris this, Chris that. And every time I ask you why you do stay with this man? And you tell me you love him. But me, I do not think you d.”

First of all I would like to thank Elin very much for allowing me to do my first guest post as Izzy van Swelm. The imminent release of my first book is much in my mind, so I want to talk a little about my experiences with the process thus far.

This post also comes at a time when in the LGBTQ romance community, we have witnessed what is generally called ‘author’s behaving badly.’ If I had been as new to social platforms, as I am to publishing, I may well have thrown my hands up and said ‘I don’t want to be a part of this’. It has been very saddening and disheartening.

My experience of authors while working towards being published couldn’t have been more different. I have always wanted to write, but I wanted my first novel to be the one that changed the world…the one that made people love each other…ended famine…helped world peace and was a literary masterpiece. A pretty tall order and it kept me from seriously writing for a very long time.

I have been blogging and reviewing with Prism Book Alliance under my own name for some time and I attended UKMeet in 2014 as a reviewer and blogger. I offered my services to one of the organisers Charlie Cochrane, as a volunteer on the registration desk to combat any initial shyness. I let slip that I had an outline and first chapter for a novel… if I found the courage could I approach the publishers attending the Meet? Charlie became my fairy godmother from then on and arranged meetings with three publishers who would be attending. She also stopped my doubts and firmed my purpose. I couldn’t have wished for a better motivator…

While I was at UKMeet and preparing to see publishers, in between enjoying a lot of alcohol, dancing and meeting fascinating people…I was in email contact with another author, whose work I greatly admire, Alexis Hall. Every evening we would email each other, and he kept me grounded while I floated around on overenthusiasm, but shared my squealing over my small successes. I had so many people wish me luck and share in my happiness. That weekend will always stay with me as a total joyous memory.

Once I received my contract another author, Clare London, read over it for me and advised me on things to look out for and clauses to check before I signed it. In fact back at the Meet, over breakfast, my pen name was discussed between myself, Clare, Jordan Castillo Price and JL Merrow…I nearly became Snowy Durham!

Once I had the contract the real hard work began…actually delivering the written words you have promised. It can be hard work on days when words won’t come or you are tired maybe hungover, but on the days when everything is easy, writing is a joy. Then there is a lot of waiting…content edits…waiting…line edits…waiting…galley proofs sometimes unavoidable delays affecting release dates very frustrating. Then of course once it is released promoting your newborn!

I am on the promotion part whilst writing the sequel it can be confusing and I seem to spend all my day thinking of answers to strange questions….but it is all part of the process. If anyone asked me when I got really excited…I would say I had three real ‘delicate scream’ moments. First when I was offered a contract…second when I was emailed the first mock-up of the cover and the third at this time I am still waiting for…release day!

I wanted to write this post to give an example showing that for every argument on Facebook there are many comments…messages and emails of support and motivation. For every ‘Catfish’ there are many true souls who will donate money, and offer real help to friends in need who they may never meet in ‘real life’. For every example of hatred or insult there are written words of love, romance and hope from the many authors who truly wish to make a difference to your day, in some small way.

Excerpt:

Something flashed at the window and he looked up sharply. There was nothing there, but there had been. In that fraction of a second between his head beginning to move and his eyes orienting on the window, there had been something or someone looking in. Someone with a small pointy face. Shit.
Take it easy, he thought to himself. If something was there he didn’t want to frighten it away before he found out what it was.
He took up the uneaten pizza, making a show of putting it onto a plate and into the fridge. The back door was open to let in the summer warmth, and the bin was next to it, out of sight of the window. He folded the pizza box, and headed for the bin – only he wasn’t going to the bin at all. He lifted the lid, so the sound carried out into the garden, but before he let the lid drop he dived for the back door.
Nothing was there, but there had been. There had been someone crouching under the window, peeping in. It was someone with long white hair, a pointed face, and unnaturally blue eyes. It was all seen in the blink of an eye, and after he’d blinked there was nothing there, and no sign there ever had been.
“I know you’re there. I’ve seen you three times now,” he called into the silence. “I know what you are.” Why had he even said that? It couldn’t have been anything but a figment of his imagination. Human beings couldn’t move that fast, and it was certainly no animal. Then what? A fairy? Hah.
Smiling at his own foolishness, he went back into the house and closed the door.
He was half way through the remaining pizza, drinking his third bottle of beer, and feeling pretty mellow, when there was a soft tapping at the back door. This surprised him very much. No one ever knocked on the back door. Why would they? How could they? They’d have to be in the garden, and there were only two ways into it, the door at which they now tapped, or a tiny gate right at the bottom which would have necessitated them traipsing right through the garden. Who would do that?
With a frown, gripping the bottle in his hand like a weapon, he walked through the kitchen to the door. He could see a vague form through the frosted glass. There was definitely someone there. He wondered if they’d disappear by the time he opened the door. He laughed at himself for the foolish thought.
When the door opened, Keiron froze. He’d never seen anything— anyone remotely like the creature who stood on his back door-step.

Author bio:

Cheryl was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was sixteen, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.
Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews and cousin and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.
Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a re-enactment group who travelled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.
It was here she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, kept the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.
In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the valleys with her son, one hamster, two black cats, and a crazy dog. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close.

Chance to be King

About The Book

2nd Edition

After working nonstop for two years, actor Eric Pawlowski desperately needs a respite from his grueling schedule and the crippling migraines that come with it. Thinking that a few weeks in a secluded cottage is just the thing, his vacation gets off to a rough start when he almost mows down the only other guy who lives on the remote road. Fortunately Thomas is quick to forgive, and soon he, Eric, and Eric’s two dogs are palling around like they’ve known each other for years.

But when Eric witnesses Thomas coldly order a lost stranger off his property, he starts to question how well he knows him. Despite a mutual attraction that has Eric cursing every time a well-meaning member of the nearby small town interrupts their attempts to get intimate, Eric wonders if acting on his desire for Thomas will get him involved in a situation he shouldn’t be in. When his rented cabin catches fire in the middle of the night and the firemen call it arson, it confirms Eric’s suspicions.

To keep Eric with him, it’s up to Thomas to come clean about who he is… and his involvement in a decade-old web of tragedy and revenge into which Eric has unwittingly walked.

Excerpt

“So… you’re Sky Davies, huh?”

Worried, Eric twisted to look over his shoulder at Thomas. “Is that a problem?”

Thomas looked up and caught his eye. “Not really, I guess. I can understand why you kept it quiet. Ted and Mark will be discreet. They have good practice at that,” he said cryptically as he patted Eric’s shoulder gently. “All finished.”

“Have you seen any of my films?” Eric asked as he put his T-shirt back on. His skin did feel soothed, and he made a mental note to get some of that cream for future use.

“Most of them, actually. I just didn’t put two and two together.” Eric looked at Thomas incredulously. “What? I’m not completely isolated here. We do have a movie theatre nearby.” Thomas seemed almost defensive.

“I wouldn’t have thought action films were quite your style.”

“I may be queer, but I’m still a guy. I like explosions as much as the next man. I suppose you think I’m into arty French films?”

No. Well, yes. But actually, Eric had got stuck on “queer” and hadn’t really moved past that. “So you’re gay?”

“Yes. Yes, I am. Is that a problem?” Thomas’s voice had hardened, and he sat back on his heels, a frown marring his face.

“No.” Thomas didn’t look convinced by Eric’s denial. “Honestly, Tom, it’s not a problem. I’m gay too.”

Thomas nodded slowly, and his eyes softened a little. “You flirted with me. I was pretty sure you were, but we didn’t really get that far.”

“I don’t make an issue of it. You know what Hollywood is like.” For some reason Eric felt the need to justify himself. “Are you in a relationship?” Thomas asked bluntly. The way his gaze focused on Eric intently made Eric feel the question was significant.

Eric gave Thomas a direct look. “No, I’m not. I haven’t been for a long time. I’ve been too busy with my career and, well, it’s not easy being in a long-term straight relationship in my business, let alone a gay one.”

“I guess.” Thomas got off the floor and wiped his hands on some tissues before sitting back on the sofa with his cup of coffee.

Eric thought it was time for some direct questions of his own. “What about you? Are you seeing someone?” Shaking his head, Thomas said, “No, and like you, I haven’t been for a while. A long while. Been a few one-night stands, though.”

Confessions on the table, they looked at each other, a little shy now they had admitted they were free and single. Eric was about to say something when his stomach got there first. The rumble broke the uncomfortable silence and made them both laugh.

“Guess I should be feeding you that steak before your dogs get there first.” Thomas got up and held out a hand to Eric. “Come on, let’s feed you, big man.”

Throughout Saving Crofton Hall I drop in a few hints alluding to some of the earls who have come between Anthony Redbourn, the 1st Earl, from The Crofton Chronicles, and Benjamin Redbourn, the current (16th) Earl of Crofton.
I thought it might be nice to give little history into one of the Ben’s predecessors, so I present Percival Redbourn as if he had his own Wikipedia entry.

~~~
Percival Anthony Richard Redbourn 6th Earl of Crofton, from 1760 to 1790, member of the British nobility
Born: 4th April 1730, England
Died: 9th October 1790
Children: Thomas Redbourn, 7th Earl of Crofton, Ann Hadlay (Duchess of Carroway),
Siblings: Lady Helen Walshington
Spouse: Elizabeth Redbourn
Other notable relationships: Rumours persisted around Rupert Listely, 3rd Earl of Berry and Sir Phillip Gilman, naval captain.
Parents: Frances Redbourn 5th Earl of Crofton, Lady Jane Killen
Education: Harrow School. Trinity College, Cambridge
Memorable fact: Won ‘The Duchess’ a painting by Gainsborough in a drinking games, but hated the painting and hung in a guest bedroom where he housed his least favourite guests
Elin’s Review
Highly enjoyable update in the affairs of the Redbourne family as the current Earl, Benjamin, does whatever he has to in order to keep the great house in his own hands. up to and including – the horror – opening it to the public!
And so his troubles deepen, because Ben, dubbed the Playboy Earl by the red tops, has no idea how to go about it. Luckily his sister has and calls in her pal Ashley, an earnest young man with experience in the commercial heritage field. Playboy Earl and earnest bespectacled history geek have to negotiate all the pitfalls of the heritage business while fending off threats both from without and, even worse, from within. As the saying goes “you can choose your friends”!
I enjoyed this book as a romance and as a quirky comedy of manners but it was the detail of how to make a great private house into a public venue that amused me most. Health and Safety, Fire Regulations, portion sizes, business plans – been there, torn my hair out. Great stuff and I can’t wait for the next instalment.
About the author:
Taylin Clavelli lives in the United Kingdom, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, and a short journey from the world famous Cadbury’s Chocolate factory. She’s married with children and loves her family with all her heart.
Her love of books has been a long standing affair, with Taylin liking nothing better than to lose herself in an imaginary world.
Until she met Lily Velden, she never considered trying her hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged her to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, she hasn’t stopped. Her confidence eventually led to her writing an original work for submission.
Her first published work was Boys, Toys, and Carpet Fitters, developed for the Dreamspinner Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home.
Now she absolutely adores immersing herself into the characters she creates, and transferring the pictures in her brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.
Outside of writing, her interests include; martial arts (she’s a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do), horse-riding, all of which facilitates her love of a wide variety of movies. Her action heroes include Jet Li and Tony Jaa—finding the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill both amazing and a privilege to watch. If pressed, she’ll admit to thinking that the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. Her all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
The simple things in life that make her day, putting a smile on her face are:
Laughter – especially that of her children.
The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes her mouth salivate.
The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.
Old houses hide secrets, sometimes dark ones.
In the 1970’s, London based family, Marjorie, Stanley and their theatrically bent son fall in love with a dilapidated Victorian seaside villa.  Dreaming of a better life by the sea, they transform the property into a luxury guesthouse, ignorant of the tragic events that occurred there at the beginning of the century.  They discover that their guests are not the only other occupants in the building.
The souls trapped within the house offer the temptation of wealth and power, but all come with a deadly price.  Stanley, supported by his ambitious wife, enters political office. Marjorie will stop at nothing to achieve her goals for her husband, no matter who gets in the way.
Thirty years later, an affluent gay couple, Jez and Graham, purchase the hotel, which now unoccupied has once again fallen into disrepair.  They are blissfully unaware of the building’s grisly past.  Jez falls under the influence of the spirits within the house, rapidly achieving fame, fortune, and a life beyond his wildest imagination, but the price is ultimately the corruption of his very soul.
Bound by a common destiny, both Marjorie and Jez’s fates lie inextricably intertwined across time and connected to the house.  Their gruesome realisation is that death is not necessarily a release.
Author Bio:
I am a gay man in my early forties.  I escaped the London rat race by buying a small hotel in the beautiful coastal town of Torquay, England with my civil partner.  My career has been in business but I have written articles on a freelance basis for a gay website that is part of the Gaydar group.  I am passionate about reading and writing and try to squeeze both into my busy week.  My hobbies include watching films, travelling and I am a keep-fit fanatic.  The hotel provides me with a constant source of writing material, given my interactions with the weird and wonderful British public.  I served briefly as a police officer in London and considered writing a story about this, but I do not think anyone would believe me.  I am an alumnus from the great seat of learning known as Portsmouth University.
See the hotel Ian owns!
Excerpt:
I write this book in my twilight years. Though considerable time has passed since these tragic events occurred, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be controversial. Some people will suspect me of profiteering. However, if I am privileged enough to see this work published, then I will donate any proceeds to the affected surviving family members. The money would be of little use to me now, as I am elderly, and I have no heirs.
Perhaps writing this is a form of therapy, a way to assuage my own guilt. Goodness knows, I have spent much time reflecting on the ‘what ifs.’ Over the years, I have learned to forgive myself the errors of my past. However, I will never forget the pain that I have caused others through my poor decisions.
